The Aviation Safety Forum together with the Standards Consultative Committee (SCC) forms an integrated consultative mechanism for CASA.
The industry members of the Standards Consultative Committee assist CASA officials in developing proposals for regulatory change.
The ASF provides the CEO with advice on the broad policy implications of the proposals. In this way, industry is able to participate at every level of the standards development and review process.
The ASF provides strategic advice directly to the CASA CEO after each meeting and in turn the CEO informs the Minister of the outcomes of the meetings and proposed action on significant issues that emerge. The ASF meets at least four times a year in Canberra.
Peter's appointment is a result of the stated intention of the recently appointed CEO of CASA, Mr Bruce Byron AM, to strengthen both the SCC and the ASF.
The members of the forum who are appointed by the CEO of CASA have worked in every area within aviation including passenger transport, engineering, aerial agriculture and general aviation and there is also an aviation consumer representative.
Both the Chief Executive Officer and the Chief Operating Officer of CASA, together with a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) representative and a representative of Airservices Australia are members of the Forum. A representative of the Department Of Transport and Regional Services (DOTARS) attends meetings as an observer.
The ASF is chaired by Ms Carol Durkin, a lawyer, who is the former President of the Australian Women Pilots Association. An experienced pilot Ms Durkin is an active member of the Aviation Law Society and the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators.
